The story of America is written in every small business. It’s written in the cafes where we meet our first loves. And in the boutiques where we buy our babies’ clothes.
In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need — getting more customers. The first-ever Small Business Saturday was held on November 27. It encouraged people across the country to support small, local businesses, and started a holiday shopping tradition.
The idea was to encourage people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This single day has grown into a powerful movement, and more people are taking part than ever before. In 2011, the Day became official. From Washington, D.C., to Washington State, governors, mayors, senators, and even President Obama all voiced their support for Small Business Saturday.
In 2012, American Express encouraged small business owners to take charge of the day, helping them promote their business through free, personalized ads, which appeared millions of times across the web. Last year, more neighborhoods than ever celebrated Small Business Saturday, with individuals and local organizations pledging to support the day as Neighborhood Champions.
This year, the big day is November 29, 2014 and the Winthrop Harbor Chamber of Commerce has signed up with American Express as a Neighborhood Champion.
All Chamber members who attend this month’s Chamber Networking Meeting on November 19, 2014 will receive a free Shop Small promotional kit courtesy of American Express.
